Fresh Charges for Medvedchuk Over Calls to Hand Ukraine to Russia
New Criminal Charges for Viktor Medvedchuk
According to Главком: Viktor Medvedchuk now faces additional accusations for justifying Russian aggression and advocating changes to Ukraine’s state borders. The charges stem from an interview published on the NuoFlix YouTube channel. Medvedchuk, a former lawmaker from the now-banned Opposition Platform - For Life party, argued that the entirety of Ukraine should become part of the Russian Federation.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the suspicion involves public calls to alter Ukraine’s state borders and the justification of Russia’s armed aggression against the country. Medvedchuk is accused of publicly urging actions to change Ukraine’s territory and state borders in violation of the constitutional order, committed by a group of individuals in a preliminary conspiracy, on a repeated basis (Part 2 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Additionally, he faces charges for justifying, denying the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which began in 2014, and glorifying its participants, carried out through mass media, by a group of individuals in a preliminary conspiracy, on a repeated basis (Part 2 of Article 28, Part 3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Background on Medvedchuk
It is worth noting that Medvedchuk is the godfather of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is implicated in multiple criminal cases. He is accused of high treason and collaborationist activities. In September 2022, Medvedchuk was detained in Ukraine and later handed over to Russia as part of a prisoner exchange for Ukrainian servicemen. The Prosecutor General’s Office has also filed an indictment against him regarding a scheme to seize state property.
This development underscores the ongoing legal actions against individuals suspected of collaboration and justifying Russian aggression toward Ukraine. As the situation in Ukraine remains tense, such charges are significant for upholding the rule of law and national security. The criminal cases against Medvedchuk reflect the efforts of Ukrainian authorities to combat disinformation and maintain state sovereignty during the armed conflict.
In addition to the recent allegations against Medvedchuk, there are ongoing investigations involving other individuals linked to his case. Recently, six people were charged for their involvement in the illegal utilization of 220 hectares of forest land, further illustrating the extensive legal challenges surrounding Medvedchuk and his associates.
