Kharkiv Mayor Rules Out Military Administration for the City
The Situation in Kharkiv
According to Главком: Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov has stated that the establishment of a military administration in the city will not happen in the near future. He explained that the city council has been functioning since the start of the war, carrying out critical tasks to sustain the city's operations during the conflict. The city, located near the Russian border, has been a primary target since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
'Look, our city council has been working since the beginning of the war. We have done incredible things: we convened during shelling and no one ran away. We have held and continue to hold the city so that life can go on.' Ihor Terekhov, Mayor of Kharkiv
This winter, Russia concentrated its attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, particularly in Kharkiv. This has resulted in tens of thousands of homes being left without heat and electricity, with some buildings now beyond repair. The changing tactics of Russian shelling, which now target specific infrastructure objects, have complicated the process of restoring energy and heating systems.
Responding to the Challenges
In response to these challenges, Kharkiv is beginning the construction of underground facilities, including subterranean schools. The city has also announced plans to build its first underground kindergarten, aiming to provide a safe environment for children during military operations.
The situation in Kharkiv remains difficult due to ongoing hostilities and infrastructure attacks. The creation of underground spaces demonstrates the local authorities' commitment to ensuring the safety of residents, especially children, during bombardments. This initiative may also become a crucial step in preserving the city's functionality amidst the war and the new challenges facing Kharkiv's inhabitants.
