The Ministry of Energy named the terms for the restoration of Ukraine's energy system after the blackout on January 31
Ukraine's energy system is gradually emerging from the systemic accident that occurred on January 31 and caused large-scale power outages. In several regions, critical infrastructure has already been energized, and the phased return of electricity to consumers is underway. This is reported by the Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal.
The Ministry of Energy explained the reasons for the blackout on January 31
According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the accident occurred due to simultaneous disconnection of high-voltage lines between the power systems of Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova, as well as between the Western and Central regions of the country. This led to cascading disruptions in the Unified Energy System and the forced disconnection of nuclear power plant units.
To preserve the integrity of the energy system, energy workers implemented emergency disconnections in certain areas as the power deficit remains significant.
The Ministry of Energy named the terms for restoring electricity supply
According to experts, electricity supply is expected to be restored within the next few hours, but the timelines may vary depending on the region. The agency emphasizes that bringing nuclear units to nominal capacity requires additional time.
Currently, priority is given to energizing:
-
critical infrastructure facilities;
-
water and heat supply systems;
-
hospitals and other socially important institutions.
After this, the gradual connection of household consumers will begin.
According to Denys Shmyhal, as of 14:00, electricity supply for critical infrastructure has already been restored in Kyiv, Kyiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. In Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, and Odesa regions, electricity is gradually being returned to people. At the same time, some regions remain on emergency schedules due to the ongoing power deficit.
