Trump's Peace Plan: Why Merz Expressed Doubts and Proposed His Own Path
Statement by the Chancellor of Germany
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, expressed doubts about the possibility of adopting the US peace plan by Thursday due to existing differences. He noted that reaching an agreement within this timeframe is not completely ruled out, but is unlikely. Merz expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of making such a decision in light of the current disputes between the parties.
US Plan and its Demands
The US plan includes 28 points, among which are demands on Ukraine. In particular, according to the peace plan, Ukraine must:
- refuse to join NATO,
- maintain a non-nuclear status,
- limit the size of its army to 600,000 people.
Additionally, the plan involves recognizing Crimea, the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Luhansk People's Republic as Russian territories and lifting sanctions on Russia.
In response to the challenges facing the peace process, Merz introduced his own proposal for a path to peace, which is smaller than the American plan of 28 points. He emphasized the importance of developing a document that can gain Ukraine's approval, using the American plan as a basis.
The situation surrounding the US peace plan highlights the complexity of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The varying positions of the parties and disputes over key points of the agreement indicate that reaching a consensus may require more time and effort. Merz's proposal could be an important step in involving Ukraine in the negotiation process; however, its effectiveness will remain in question without the support of the international community.
