Значне зниження температури до -20°C в Україні 21 січня викликає занепокоєння.

Sub-Zero Temperatures Grip Ukraine on January 21

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine is bracing for a severe cold snap on January 21, with temperatures forecast to drop as low as -20 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists have issued a health warning for city residents, citing a heightened risk due to a potential decline in air quality.

According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, overnight lows in the western, northern, and Vinnytsia regions will range from -12 to -17 degrees, with some localized areas potentially seeing -20 degrees. Daytime temperatures there will be between -5 and -10 degrees. Across the rest of the country, nighttime temperatures are expected to be from -10 to -15 degrees, rising to between -2 and -7 degrees during the day. However, a thaw is possible in the south and Zakarpattia, with temperatures from -3 to +2 degrees.

Air Quality Concerns and Expert Advice

Experts warn that a temperature inversion in urban areas could trap pollutants, significantly worsening air quality. This phenomenon is common during winter high-pressure systems. The concentration of hazardous fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is expected to rise, posing a direct threat to public health.

'The real cause of pollution is the emission sources themselves, while weather conditions determine whether these impurities will disperse or accumulate near the earth's surface.' - specialists

Forecasters added that the frost near the ground will dissipate slowly and will be heavily dependent on cloud cover, leading to a cold night followed by a chilly day. City dwellers are advised to exercise caution and take measures to protect their health under these conditions.

The combination of extreme cold and deteriorating air quality is a pressing issue in Ukraine, particularly in the context of global climate patterns. Reducing urban air pollution requires a comprehensive strategy, including:

  • strict controls on industrial emissions
  • regulation of vehicle exhaust

It is crucial for residents to heed expert recommendations to minimize health risks during such adverse weather events.
