Disruption Erupts During Eurovision 2026 Semi-Final

According to Главком: During the first semi-final of Eurovision 2026, held recently, Israeli contestant Noam Bettan performed his song 'Michelle.' As his act unfolded, four protesters attempted to interrupt the performance, prompting police intervention. Austrian broadcaster ORF reported that the demonstrators shouted slogans, including 'Stop the genocide.'

The protest occurred while Bettan was on stage, with one audience member near a microphone loudly voicing their stance. This moment was broadcast live because ORF was transmitting the raw audio feed from the venue’s microphones. When the protesters continued to cause a disturbance, security escorted them out of the auditorium. In total, three individuals were removed by security personnel for breaching order. The protest moment was not included in the official recording of the performance.

Boycotts and Reactions

Ahead of the semi-final, several countries-including Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, and Iceland-boycotted Israel’s participation due to its military actions in the Gaza Strip. Despite this, Israel was allowed to compete. Noam Bettan took the stage as the 10th performer, delivering 'Michelle' in three languages: Hebrew, French, and English.

As a result of the performance, Israel secured a spot as the sixth finalist from the first semi-final of Eurovision 2026. Reflecting on the incident, Noam Bettan stated:

“I didn’t let the booing bother me; I focused on the Israeli flags”
