EU Covers Half the Cost of New Service Zone Under Construction Near Ukraine's Border with Romania
Modern Service Zone Taking Shape in Odesa Region
According to Міністерство інфраструктури: A new, modern service zone is currently under construction near the Reni–Giurgiulești border crossing in Ukraine’s Odesa region. This project is being carried out under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, with 50% of the funding provided by a European Union grant and the remaining 50% coming from Ukraine’s state budget. Located along the M-15 Odesa–Reni highway, the service zone covers an area of 1.7 hectares.
Designed to accommodate both freight and passenger vehicles, the site has already seen the formation of the road base and the assembly of building frameworks. Work is ongoing to install utility systems, sanitary facilities, and carry out landscaping. The goal of this infrastructure is to provide comfortable conditions for drivers and to help organize traffic flow before the checkpoint.
Upcoming Modernization Plans
Serhiy Derkach: 'In 2026, we are continuing a large-scale modernization of border infrastructure. We plan to open 6 more service zones, which will ensure normal conditions for drivers and orderly traffic near the border.'
This project represents a significant step forward in the development of Ukraine’s transport infrastructure. The creation of a modern service zone at the Reni–Giurgiulești border crossing is part of a broader initiative backed by the European Union to upgrade the country’s transportation network. Beyond improving driver conditions, it is expected to help reduce congestion at the border-a persistent issue for carriers. The planned opening of additional service zones in 2026 underscores Ukraine’s commitment to aligning its infrastructure with European standards, which could have a positive impact on the regional economy.
