A Russian Fighter from the 'Freedom of Russia' Legion Laid to Rest at Kyiv Military Cemetery
Final Farewell to Ildar Dadin
According to Главком: The ashes of Ildar Dadin, a Russian volunteer who fought with the special forces unit of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence (GUR) within the 'Freedom of Russia' Legion, have been interred at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Kyiv. Dadin was killed in action in the Kharkiv region in 2024. He is the first Russian volunteer to be buried at this memorial site.
Dadin was among the earliest individuals convicted in Russia under the law targeting 'repeated violations of rally organization rules.' Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he joined Ukraine’s defense forces, serving in a GUR special unit as part of the 'Freedom of Russia' Legion. He took part in combat operations on both the Kursk and Kharkiv fronts, where he demonstrated notable courage and determination.
His Last Battle and Recognition
During his final engagement in the Kharkiv region, Dadin lost his life while attempting to rescue a wounded comrade. Fellow soldiers, family members, and close friends gathered to pay their last respects. As his comrades noted, Dadin
“fought to the very end and died a hero-weapon in hand.”
The 'Freedom of Russia' Legion is also known for its public appeals to Russian military personnel, urging change within their country.
This event highlights the significant role foreign volunteers play in Ukraine's conflict and their contributions to the nation’s fight for independence. The burial of Ildar Dadin at the National Military Memorial Cemetery stands as a symbol of recognition for their efforts and sacrifices made in pursuit of a shared goal. It may also shape the future of volunteer movements and encourage further international support against aggression.
