Drone-Proof Netting to Cover Roads in Volyn Region Amid Belarus Threat
From the Frontline to the Border: Anti-Drone Nets Expand
According to Главком: Authorities in the Shatsk community of Ukraine's Volyn region are set to install anti-drone netting along certain road sections. The decision was discussed on June 8 during a meeting between Roman Romanyuk, head of the Volyn Regional Military Administration, and Bohdan Tymoshuk, secretary of the Shatsk settlement council. This measure is part of a broader regional security system prompted by risks emanating from Belarus.
Located just 7 kilometers from the Belarusian border, the Shatsk community faces heightened security needs. The officials' conversation focused on the situation along the Ukrainian-Belarusian frontier and the region's preparedness for potential threats. Volyn began preparing defensive lines well before the full-scale invasion, underscoring the seriousness of possible dangers.
Expanding Anti-Drone Measures
The first anti-drone corridor was established in spring 2025 along border areas of Sumy region. Since mid-spring 2025, the practice of installing anti-drone netting has been scaled up to cover major logistical routes across the entire front line. The state budget allocated 1.6 billion hryvnias for these efforts. By February 2026, the pace of construction had increased 2.5-fold, from 5 to 12 kilometers per day.
In May 2026, Belarus restricted access to forests near its border with Ukraine. According to Viktor Yahun, former deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine, most of the closed areas are located close to the borders with Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania. These actions highlight the importance of securing Ukraine's border territories.
The Shatsk community is also known for its natural resources, including 23 lakes, among them Svityaz-the deepest lake in Ukraine. With the start of the summer season, police and the National Guard will step up security measures in the community. Additional patrols will be stationed near Lake Svityaz to maintain order and safety.
'We must be as prepared as possible for any scenario. Volyn is currently one of Ukraine's most well-prepared border regions, and this work must continue.' - Roman Romanyuk
Installing anti-drone netting in the Shatsk community is part of a wider strategy to secure Ukraine's border areas, especially given the escalating situation with Belarus. These measures not only aim to shield the territory from potential threats but also demonstrate local authorities' readiness to actively respond to security challenges. Such initiatives could become a key element in the region's overall defense plan, fostering stability and peace of mind for local residents.
As Ukraine strengthens its defenses along the Belarusian border, the situation highlights the ongoing need for enhanced security measures. This recent initiative in the Volyn region is part of a larger effort to fortify the nation's borders against potential threats.
