Ukraine's Central Bank to Phase Out Older 50 and 200 Hryvnia Notes

NBU withdraws old banknotes from circulation
Національний банк України планує поступове знищення старих банкнот номіналом 50 та 200 гривень.

Withdrawal of Older Banknotes in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has announced it will gradually remove older 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes from cash circulation. This affects notes produced between 2003 and 2007. The process will occur naturally through the banking system, as financial institutions will no longer reissue these older bills to customers. Newer design banknotes, particularly those from 2014 and later, remain fully valid legal tender. This move is part of a broader, ongoing effort to modernize the country's currency system.

Once these older notes are deposited at banks, they will be withdrawn from service and sent to the National Bank for counting and eventual disposal. According to the NBU, the old bills will cease to be distributed via cash registers and ATMs, making their removal from circulation permanent for these specific series.

Purpose of the NBU Initiative

The changes are part of the National Bank's efforts to modernize Ukraine's cash circulation and ensure the public uses up-to-date banknotes. Citizens should be aware of this procedure to avoid confusion during financial transactions.

This NBU initiative aims to improve the overall quality of cash in circulation and bolster confidence in the national currency. Removing the older notes will help avoid issues related to their physical condition and value, while also facilitating the adoption of new technologies in cash-based payments. The hryvnia has undergone several redesigns since its introduction in 1996 to enhance security and durability.

The public is advised to take note of these changes to be prepared for any potential minor inconveniences when handling cash.
