Ukraine's Central Bank Launches New Commemorative Coins, Profiting from Collector Demand
New Commemorative Coins Enter Circulation
According to ХВИЛЯ: On February 24, 2026, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) released three new commemorative coins into circulation as part of its 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' series. These 10-hryvnia coins honor the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions. For context, commemorative coins are legal tender but are often purchased as collectibles rather than for everyday transactions.
In a video for the 'Minfin' channel, financial expert Oleksiy Kozyrev explained how the state profits from these issues. He noted that previous coins in the series were dedicated to the Luhansk and Donetsk regions and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Kozyrev emphasized that the state mints money that enters circulation but is not immediately presented back to the state; instead, it remains in citizens' wallets or collections.
'I want to be frank - I bought them on the numismatic market, paying 25 hryvnias for each one' - Oleksiy Kozyrev.
According to information from 'Khvylia', the NBU distributes the coins to commercial banks at their face value of 10 hryvnias. However, on the numismatic market, these same coins sell for between 25 and 40 hryvnias. Kozyrev also pointed out that collectors pay three to four times the face value for curated coin sets. The 'We Are Strong. We Are Together' series plans to issue over 50 million coins, with the total value of the release estimated at 520-540 million hryvnias.
Symbolic and Investment Value of the Coins
The National Bank of Ukraine also sells sets of circulating coins through its online store. Consequently, these new commemorative coins hold not only symbolic significance but can also become a profitable investment instrument for collectors.
The introduction of these coins is part of the NBU's strategy to support national identity and develop the culture of collecting in Ukraine. Given the growing interest in numismatics, these coins could become a significant element of the country's cultural and economic life. Their release also serves to draw attention to regions that have endured hardship, emphasizing the unity and strength of the Ukrainian people. In conditions of economic instability, they may become attractive for investment, further enhancing their value to collectors.
