Germany Delivers First Combined Heat and Power Units to Aid Kyiv Residents
Initial German Cogeneration Units Arrive in Ukraine
According to Главком: As part of a €120 million emergency energy aid package, Germany has provided Ukraine with its first two combined heat and power (CHP) units. This equipment will supply electricity and heating to residents of Kyiv, helping to stabilize the capital's energy infrastructure. This delivery is part of a broader Western effort to help Ukraine repair and defend its energy grid from systematic attacks.
On January 28, German Ambassador to Ukraine, Heiko Thoms, formally handed over the units to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. These two cogeneration units are expected to provide reliable heat and power for approximately 86,000 residents of Kyiv. Germany's ongoing support in the energy sector includes plans for imminent deliveries of the following:
- 42 additional cogeneration units,
- 76 modular boiler systems,
- and other critical energy equipment.
Continued German Energy Assistance
Ambassador Thoms had previously announced the transfer of 33 mobile thermal power plants to Ukraine, with two of those units also scheduled to arrive on January 28. He emphasized that decentralized energy supply is a crucial factor for resilience, stating Germany's commitment to strengthening Ukraine's stability by all available means. These initial two CHP units represent just one facet of Germany's substantial energy support, with many further steps planned.
"This German initiative underscores the continuation of international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing energy crisis triggered by the war."
The delivery of these cogeneration units and other equipment highlights the strategic importance of decentralized energy generation for maintaining a stable power supply in Ukraine, particularly during the challenging winter months. Future shipments of German energy equipment are poised to significantly enhance the energy independence and resilience of Ukrainian cities.
