Germany spends €1.3 billion on Ukrainian conscripts: why this caused a scandal
The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeyev, expressed his surprise and dissatisfaction concerning the demand from Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder to cut social benefits 'Bürgergeld' for Ukrainian refugees. The diplomat noted that the problem is not with the Ukrainians themselves and urged for an adequate approach to this issue, avoiding criticism and stigmatization of Ukrainian citizens.
The CSU party in Germany is against providing social assistance to military-aged Ukrainian men, arguing that this leads to significant budget expenditures for the country. The party's expert, Stefan Mayer, demands an end to these payments, emphasizing the need to revise this program.
Currently, more than 150,000 Ukrainian conscripts have already been registered in Germany, receiving social assistance. This creates significant financial obligations for the country, amounting to about €1.3 billion per year, considering all types of payments and support provided to Ukrainian citizens.
