The EU prepares new sanctions against the Russian Federation: accelerated rejection of Russian energy resources

The European Union is considering the possibility of abandoning Russian fossil fuels

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the EU is considering a rapid abandonment of Russian fossil energy resources as part of a new sanctions package against Russia. The import of crude Russian oil by sea has already been banned, which accounts for over 90% of oil imports from the Russian Federation, and a price 'ceiling' has been introduced.

Alongside these measures, the introduction of restrictions against Russia's 'shadow' fleet and third countries is being considered, as well as a quick rejection of Russian coal. Negotiations are underway for a complete halt to the import of oil and gas from Russia by 2028 and a rejection of short-term contracts.

Countries that depend on Russian energy resources, including Hungary and Slovakia, are opposed to a rapid abandonment of Russian fuels, as this could lead to price increases.

Despite this, the European Union plans to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources, which is an important step in stabilizing the situation in the region.

The clear demonstration of the European Union's emergence from dependence on Russian fuel supplies opens a new era in the region's energy policy and emphasizes the importance of diversifying energy sources to ensure energy security.
