Nike Exits S&P 100 Amid Backlash from Bold Inclusion Goals and Controversial Social Campaigns
Nike’s Financial Downturn: Insights from Petro Chernyshov
According to Radiotrek — Світ: Petro Chernyshov, former CEO of Kyivstar and current Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the National Aviation University, shared his perspective on Nike’s recent financial struggles. The company’s aggressive push for racial and gender diversity, alongside experimental social initiatives, has coincided with a sharp decline in its market value. Despite surpassing its ambitious inclusion targets ahead of schedule, Nike’s stock plummeted, ultimately leading to its removal from the S&P 100 index in 2026.
The Impact of Social Initiatives on Nike’s Performance
Nike aimed for underrepresented minorities to make up 35% of its administrative staff and 30% of its directors by 2025. By 2023, these figures had already risen to 41% and 34%, respectively. Yet, during this same period, Nike’s shares dropped dramatically-losing 76% of their value over five years, closing at a 77.61% decrease. On September 21, 2026, the brand was removed from the S&P 100 for the first time in 18 years.
Chernyshov remarked:
“Remember the iconic slogan ‘Just Do It’? Over the past five years, Nike’s stock has nosedived by an astonishing 76%, even reaching a 77.61% drop at closing, as data shows. It’s like free-falling without a safety net. The market and consumers didn’t embrace the idea of inclusive marketing, like men wearing supportive bras.”
Nike’s advertising also featured a body-positive Black woman and a transgender individual portraying a woman, sparking widespread public debate. According to Chernyshov, these social experiments may have played a significant role in alienating parts of Nike’s consumer base, negatively impacting the company’s financial health.
This case exemplifies how bold social responsibility ambitions can produce unforeseen economic consequences. Nike’s plummeting stock and exclusion from a major index challenge the effectiveness of inclusion-driven marketing strategies and highlight the importance of carefully gauging consumer sentiment. Other businesses considering similar initiatives might find valuable lessons here about balancing social goals with market realities.
