According to Главком: A climate change projection for southern Ukraine has sparked concern among experts. According to the environmental organization 'Ecoaction,' the Odesa and Kherson regions, along with the Crimean Peninsula, could be underwater by the year 2100. This scenario is driven by a faster-than-normal rise in ocean levels, which is accelerating at a pace not seen in thousands of years. The forecast is based on the 'Water Is Near' study.

The report notes that over the past 3,000 years, ocean level fluctuations did not exceed 0.2 mm per year. However, between 1901 and 2010, the global mean sea level rose by nearly 20 cm. Coastal zones have proven most vulnerable, including:

  • all coastal areas of the Black and Azov Seas;
  • major river deltas;
  • low-lying coastal zones.

The flood risk extends beyond the Odesa and Kherson regions, threatening resort towns, millions of hectares of farmland, seaports, and industrial infrastructure.

Climate Change Scenarios and Consequences

Modeling of catastrophic outcomes follows a scenario where the global average temperature rises by more than 4 degrees Celsius. In such a case, the area of potentially hazardous land could expand to 1 million hectares, roughly equivalent to the size of the Ternopil region.
