Occupation refuses to build housing for residents of the destroyed Mariupol: what they offer instead
The housing situation in Mariupol
According to Главком: The occupation administration in Mariupol has refused to build compensatory housing for residents of the 'Stadion' microdistrict, whose homes were destroyed during Russian shelling in the spring of 2022. Instead, the occupiers offer an 'alternative' in the form of intact apartments from other Mariupol residents who have left the city.
In the spring of 2022, Russian shelling led to the destruction of about 50 residential buildings in the 'Stadion' microdistrict. Residents of this area have been without a roof over their heads for almost four years, and during the siege of the city, up to 90% of the housing stock was destroyed. As a result of these events, the population of the city has decreased from 420,000 to 100,000 residents.
New initiatives of the occupation administration
The occupation administration is currently preparing to open the building of the drama theater in Mariupol. At the end of December 2023, a play entitled 'Red Flower' is planned to be shown. In 2023, construction of the residential complex 'Nevsky' also began in the city. However, despite these initiatives, the issue of providing housing for those who lost their homes remains unresolved.
The refusal of the occupation administration to build compensatory housing indicates serious social problems faced by Mariupol residents. Many of them remain without proper housing and support, complicating their return to normal life after the war. At the same time, the opening of new cultural facilities, such as the drama theater, may be an attempt by the administration to create an illusion of the city's recovery, but without addressing the housing issue, it will not significantly improve the situation for the affected. The circumstances faced by the population highlight the importance of international attention to the humanitarian needs of the region.
