Consecration of the New Tower of Jesus Christ

According to УНІАН — Туризм: On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV consecrated the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The ceremony drew approximately 120,000 attendees who witnessed this landmark event. Soaring to a height of 172.5 meters, the tower now makes the Sagrada Familia the tallest church on the planet. The consecration coincides with the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí, who dedicated over four decades of his life to crafting this masterpiece.

Pope Leo XIV led the ceremony and celebrated a special Mass. During the service, he remarked that

“the Sagrada Familia is a masterpiece of stone, color, and light”

and that

“it stands as a symbol of unity and harmony for all of Spain.”

In attendance near the basilica were King Felipe VI of Spain, Queen Letizia, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, underscoring the national significance of the occasion.

The Towers of the Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia features 18 towers in total, with the following dedications:

  • 12 towers honor the apostles,
  • four are dedicated to the evangelists,
  • one is devoted to the Virgin Mary,
  • and the central tower is consecrated to Jesus Christ.

All construction work is expected to be completed within the next decade. The momentous event concluded with a dazzling light show and fireworks launched from the basilica’s façade, providing a spectacular finale to the celebrations.

With its unique style, the Sagrada Familia truly embodies what Antoni Gaudí himself described as a “forest of stone and light.” This majestic temple has become not only a religious hub but also a vital emblem of Spain’s cultural heritage.

The consecration of the new tower at the Sagrada Familia represents a significant milestone for both the religious community and Spain’s cultural landscape. Over a century after construction first began, the basilica continues to captivate millions of tourists and worshippers alike, highlighting the enduring importance of Gaudí’s architecture within global cultural heritage. The anticipated completion of all towers and elements of the temple is set to further cement its status as one of the greatest architectural achievements of the modern era.
