Eastern and Central European Countries Plan Eurovision Comeback

According to Главком: Following Bulgaria’s win at Eurovision 2026, several Eastern and Central European nations have announced their intention to return to the contest in 2027. North Macedonia was the first to officially confirm its comeback. Zoran Ristovski, director of the Macedonian broadcaster MRT, declared the country’s participation in the next edition-a significant move for North Macedonia, which had missed four consecutive contests due to financial constraints. The nation’s best Eurovision result remains a seventh-place finish achieved by Tamara Todevska with the song 'Proud' in 2019. Notably, Todevska’s victory in the jury vote that year marked a historic milestone for the country.

Hungary and Slovakia Weigh Their Return

Hungary and Slovakia are also considering a comeback. Hungary has not participated in the contest since 2020, but the country’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar-who took office after his party 'Tisza' won the April elections-has expressed interest in joining. Magyar commented:

'I have received many letters and requests from the younger generation. I have no objections; there is no reason not to take part in such a competition.' - Péter Magyar

Slovakia, which last competed in Eurovision in 2012, is also aiming for a 2027 return. The country had previously considered rejoining in 2026 but backed out due to high licensing fees and low domestic audience interest. Indřich Bardan, director of 'Radio Slovakia', emphasized the importance of participation for the nation.

In light of Bulgaria’s Eurovision 2026 victory, the prospects for Eastern and Central European countries returning to the contest in 2027 look increasingly promising, as their representatives show a strong desire to compete on the international stage once again. This trend may signal a renewed regional interest in the competition and a drive to enhance their cultural visibility worldwide.

The momentum surrounding Eastern European nations rejoining Eurovision in 2027 is further fueled by the anticipation of the upcoming semi-finals. As countries like North Macedonia, Hungary, and Slovakia prepare for their returns, the competition landscape is evolving.
