Retired couple walked 16 km under fire: details of their rescue
An elderly couple from Donetsk decided to evacuate to Lyman to escape Russian shelling. The pensioners, who had been hiding in the basement for a long time due to constant attacks, were completely without food after their house was destroyed by the occupiers. The event was described by the husband: the couple had completely lost their property and set off on foot to Lyman.
'We were hiding in the basement because they were bombing. We hadn't eaten for three days. It hit, and we barely managed to escape from the basement. Everything burned, nothing was left. We decided to go to our son-in-law in Lyman. We left at 9 a.m. and reached around 2 p.m. We stopped at people's houses because my wife felt unwell with her heart. We covered 16 km, holding on to the bike. The woman walked barefoot because her feet were sore from the boots.'
, said the husband.
Evacuation and support
'White angels'
transported the couple to a safe place where members of the
'Red Cross'
were waiting for them. Thanks to this assistance, the couple has the opportunity to reach their relatives in other regions of Ukraine. In addition to them, a few other people were also evacuated. Now, residents of the Lyman community are increasingly turning to the police with requests for evacuation due to the intensification of enemy attacks.
The Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, refuted Russian claims about blocking the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Pokrovsk and Kupiansk, pointing to the complexity of the situation in certain areas but acknowledging that these accusations are unfounded.
According to reports, elderly pensioners from Donetsk were evacuated to Lyman in the Kharkiv region after their house was destroyed during Russian shelling. Residents were provided with support and an opportunity to contact their relatives in other regions for further stay. There are also reports of an increasing number of evacuated residents from the Lyman community due to rising shelling and obstacles from Russian drones.
