Severe Weather Alert Issued for Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a warning for hazardous weather conditions across the country on February 17. A stark temperature contrast will see the south reach up to +7°C, while the north plunges to nighttime lows of -19°C. Icing conditions are forecast for most regions, excluding the east and southeast. Kyiv and its region are under a Level I (yellow) danger alert. This significant temperature gradient is typical for late winter in Eastern Europe, often leading to unstable conditions.

Weather Forecast for February 17

Snow and rain are expected overnight in Crimea and during the day in the southern and southeastern parts of the country. No significant precipitation is anticipated elsewhere. An easterly wind of 5-10 m/s will prevail.

  • Northern regions: Night: -14°C to -19°C; Day: -5°C to -10°C.
  • Most other areas: Night: -6°C to -11°C; Day: 0°C to -5°C.
  • Zakarpattia and the south: Night: -1°C to -6°C; Day: Up to +3°C.
  • Crimea: Daytime highs up to +7°C.

In Kyiv, February 17 will be dry but very cold, with nighttime temperatures dropping to -14°C to -16°C and daytime highs of only -7°C to -9°C. Meteorologists warn that the icy conditions and extreme cold could disrupt energy infrastructure, construction, utilities, and transportation.
