Over 41 thousand Czechs apologized for the anti-Ukrainian statement of Speaker Okamura
Petition in support of Ukraine in the Czech Republic
According to Главком: In the Czech Republic, over 41.2 thousand people signed a letter of apology for the anti-Ukrainian statement made by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura. The petition, titled 'I cannot remain silent: An open letter to the Ambassador of Ukraine in the Czech Republic', was created by teacher Antonin Kolarz from the Plzen region.
The reason for creating this letter was the statements made by Okamura, which triggered a negative reaction among the Czech public. Antonin Kolarz noted:
“I feel the need to apologize to you for Tomio Okamura's words, which directly contradict the facts.”
The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic expressed the opinion in his statement that 'state money should go to pensioners, the disabled, and families with children, rather than to support a war abroad'.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, and the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, did not comment on the situation. However, the significant number of signatures on the petition indicates an active stance of the Czech society towards supporting Ukraine and protesting against anti-Ukrainian statements.
Increasing Sensitivity of Czech Society
This event reflects the increasing sensitivity of Czech society to issues related to the war in Ukraine and attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees. The petition, which gathered over 41 thousand signatures, demonstrates that many people in the Czech Republic do not support anti-Ukrainian sentiments, but on the contrary, strive to express solidarity with Ukraine.
This may indicate a shift in public opinion and increased civic activism on international political issues.
