Portugal has enacted a strict immigration law that changes the rules for family reunification, visa acquisition, and citizenship.

According to Relocate, the new law has received support from the ruling coalition and the right-wing parties Chega and Iniciativa Liberal, and is now awaiting the president's signature.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern, noting that the new rules may complicate integration and limit migrants' rights due to more complicated family reunification procedures and increased financial requirements.

Changes in Legislation

According to the new law, a migrant must reside in Portugal for at least two years before applying for family reunification. Additionally, they must have a sufficient level of income and housing to obtain residency status.

The law also stipulates that work visas will be issued only to highly-qualified specialists. For Ukrainians and other citizens, the waiting time for citizenship has significantly increased.

The new law in Portugal is causing discussions and controversies in society regarding its impact on the country's immigration policy and migrants' rights. Its adoption may significantly alter the conditions for staying and integrating foreigners in Portuguese society.
