Overnight Strikes Hit Russian Oil Refinery in Yaroslavl and Vessels at Sea, Ukraine Reports
Attacks on Russian Military Targets
According to ХВИЛЯ: On the nights of July 16-17, Ukraine's defense forces launched strikes against Russian military and military-economic assets. Among the targets were:
- an oil refinery in Yaroslavl
- ships in the Black and Azov Seas
- fuel depots and bridges in the Donetsk and Kursk regions
The Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl-one of Russia's largest, processing roughly 15 million tons of crude annually-was hit, resulting in a confirmed impact and fire. In the waters of the Black and Azov Seas, two tankers (including one gas carrier) and a tugboat came under attack. In Kerch, a Project 10410 Svetlyak-class patrol vessel, the oil terminal TES-Terminal-1, and a fuel and lubricants storage facility were struck.
Strategic Sites in Eastern Ukraine
Within the Donetsk region, several strategic locations were targeted:
- the Shakhtarsk oil depot
- a railway bridge over the Kalmius River near Staromarivka
- a materiel warehouse in the Pokrovsk area
- a command observation post near Novotroitske
In the Kursk region, a road bridge near Kozyno was also attacked.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that 'systematic strikes on enemy military and economic facilities will continue.'
These operations highlight an ongoing Ukrainian tactical campaign to degrade Russia's military infrastructure. By targeting key resources and logistics routes, Ukraine aims to weaken the enemy's combat capabilities-a strategy that could significantly shape the future course of fighting and the broader conflict dynamics.
These recent strikes are part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to target critical military assets deep within Russian territory. For a detailed look at how these long-range attacks are reshaping the conflict dynamics, check out our coverage on Ukraine's deep strikes into Russia.
