According to Главком: A state of emergency has been declared in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, after severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall. The disaster has impacted over 327,000 people across 283 towns and villages, cutting off their electricity supply. Emergency services are now on high alert as the situation in the region causes significant concern.
Affected Areas and Infrastructure Damage
Among the areas hardest hit are the city of Derbent and other parts of the republic. In Khasavyurt, floodwaters have damaged a railway bridge, while two bridge spans on the Khasavyurt-Kadiyurt section of the North Caucasus Railway have collapsed. This damage severely disrupts regional transport links, creating further hardship for residents. Dagestan is a republic in Russia's North Caucasus region, an area prone to extreme weather events.
Sergei Melikov, the Head of the Republic of Dagestan, stated: 'The actual situation has exceeded even the most pessimistic forecasts.'
The declaration of a state of emergency in Makhachkala underscores the severity of the crisis caused by the natural disaster. With more than 327,000 people without power, the scale of the problem is immense.
