Debunking the Myth of Keeping the Mantoux Test Dry

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: This text dispels the long-standing myth that the Mantoux test site must be kept dry. The Mantoux test, a form of tuberculin skin testing, is an immunological procedure used to detect exposure to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis. It is crucial to understand that water cannot penetrate the skin at the injection site and will not alter the test results. This widespread misconception likely originated from the older Pirquet skin test method, which involved scratching the skin's surface.

Proper Care for the Injection Site

Modern international guidelines, including those from the WHO and CDC, do not restrict contact with water. However, it is important to avoid any mechanical or chemical irritation of the site for 2-3 days. The following are not recommended:

  • Scrubbing the area with a washcloth or towel;
  • Scratching or rubbing the skin;
  • Applying bandages, plasters, lotions, or antiseptics to the test site.

The reaction to the Mantoux test is measured 48 to 72 hours after the injection.

A positive Mantoux result is not a diagnosis of active tuberculosis but indicates the presence of the bacteria in the body. If the test is positive, further investigations such as a chest X-ray or sputum analysis are ordered. Furthermore, an updated National Immunization Schedule took effect on January 1, 2026. Under the new schedule, the BCG vaccination is administered to a child 24 hours after birth, whereas previously it was given between the 3rd and 5th day. The BCG vaccine provides protection against tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis.

Understanding the correct care for the Mantoux test site is vital not only for obtaining accurate results but also for patient well-being. The persistence of myths about this procedure can cause unnecessary anxiety for parents, making it essential to provide reliable information. The revision of the National Immunization Schedule also highlights the commitment to ensuring timely childhood vaccination for tuberculosis prevention, marking a significant step in the country's public health strategy.

As healthcare practices evolve, understanding the implications of modern diagnostics is crucial. Recent changes in tuberculosis testing methods highlight a shift away from traditional approaches, such as the Mantoux test.
