Putin Restores Dzerzhinsky's Name to FSB Academy: The Significance of the Move
FSB Academy Receives a Renamed Honor
According to Главком: On April 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree bestowing an honorary title upon the Federal Security Service (FSB) Academy. The institution will now be known as the 'Federal State State-Funded Educational Establishment of Higher Education 'Academy of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation named after F. E. Dzerzhinsky.'' This name revives the designation the academy held from 1962 until 1992. The decree took effect immediately upon signing.
Felix Dzerzhinsky, the Polish-born Soviet state and party figure for whom the academy is now named, was a pivotal leader following the 1917 October Revolution. He was the founder and first head of the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission (Cheka), the original Soviet state security organization. From 1962 to 1992, the academy was called the Higher School of the KGB of the USSR.
The Historical Legacy of Dzerzhinsky
Dzerzhinsky is also widely recognized as the principal organizer and ideologist of the 'Red Terror,' earning him the nickname 'Iron Felix.' The Cheka he led later evolved into the Joint State Political Directorate (OGPU) and eventually the Committee for State Security (KGB). This decision to rename the FSB Academy reflects a deliberate reconnection to the historical traditions and legacy associated with Dzerzhinsky's activities.
Renaming the academy underscores a Russian effort to restore and maintain links with its Soviet past, particularly within the security services. The move can be interpreted as a symbolic gesture, signaling that modern Russia continues to value and honor those who led the state's security apparatus in the past. For Western audiences, Dzerzhinsky remains a deeply controversial figure, synonymous with political repression. Consequently, this decision is likely to provoke mixed reactions both domestically and internationally, given the historical associations of terror and purges linked to his name.
