Concerns Mount Over Potential Russian Capture of Zatoka

According to Главком: Ivan Tymochko, head of the Land Forces Reserves Council of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has expressed serious concern about the potential seizure of the town of Zatoka in Odesa Oblast by Russian forces. In an interview with Novyny.Live, he warned that control of this settlement could pose a direct threat to Moldova and help sustain Russian troops stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria. The news outlet 'Hlavkom' reported on this assessment. The situation highlights Russia's ongoing efforts to destabilize the broader Black Sea region beyond Ukraine's borders.

Tymochko suggested that Russian troops likely aim to control Zatoka to secure influence over regional trade routes. He noted that Moldova recently blocked a supply route for Russian military equipment through Transnistria, complicating Russia's logistical options.

“In my subjective opinion, their calculation was to take control of Zatoka to create a threat to Moldova and support their forces in Transnistria,” emphasized Ivan Tymochko.

Regional Conflict Context

As of January 2026, the city of Kostiantynivka, under constant fire, remains within an active combat zone, with the frontline just ten kilometers away. This underscores the persistent intensity in a region where control of strategically vital territories is fiercely contested. Zatoka, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and other settlements like Vuhledar and Pokrovsk remain under close scrutiny by military analysts due to their significance in the wider conflict.

The situation around Zatoka and the threat of its capture reflects the broader scope of military operations in Ukraine and the region. Control over such territories could significantly impact the security situation in Ukraine and neighboring countries, particularly Moldova. Zatoka's importance as a strategic point could lead to an escalation of the conflict if Russian forces succeed in their plans to seize it. Analysts continue to monitor developments closely to assess potential consequences for regional stability.
