Russia Plans to Deploy 33,000 FPV Drones Per Day: Syrskyi Reveals Staggering Target
Russia's FPV Drone Ambitions
According to Главком: Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, disclosed in an interview with The Times that Russia intends to dramatically escalate its daily use of FPV drones on the battlefield. According to Syrskyi, Moscow aims to increase the number of these unmanned aerial vehicles from the current 6,000–7,000 to as many as 33,000 per day. He remarked that
“the figure of 33,000 drones per day sounds fantastical, but the adversary indeed has such plans, and they cannot be underestimated.”
Syrskyi noted that Ukraine currently maintains an advantage in FPV drone usage, with a ratio ranging from 1.7:1 to 2:1. He also emphasized that any concentration of troops within 40 km of the front line is detected by reconnaissance drones and subsequently destroyed. In May 2024, Ukrainian forces reclaimed more territory than they lost for the first time since 2023.
Troop Numbers and Challenges
As of late June 2024, Russia's total offensive force in Ukraine numbers 721,300 military personnel. Syrskyi reported that in February, the Russian force was estimated at 711,000–712,000 troops-meaning it grew by 10,000 over four months. He also noted that while Russia has mobilized 406,000 individuals, the size of its force has remained static due to heavy losses.
The commander expressed that
“our soldiers, like the enemy’s, are essentially forced to advance on foot-as in World War I.”
He added that he cannot claim the war is approaching a turning point, but expressed hope that once the enemy has exhausted all its forces and resources, a shift may become possible.
This information underscores the immense pressure both sides face, particularly regarding combat technology. The surge in FPV drone usage could transform the nature of warfare, making it more dynamic and unpredictable. Additionally, the growing size of Russian forces points to a potential prolongation of the conflict, with serious implications for regional security. Given the high casualty rates and the constant need for reinforcements, both sides may encounter critical challenges in sustaining their military operations.
As the conflict evolves, the increasing reliance on FPV drones has become a critical factor for both sides. Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have successfully gained a significant advantage in drone operations, neutralizing 180,000 enemy targets in May alone. This development highlights the shifting dynamics of warfare and the importance of aerial reconnaissance in shaping battlefield outcomes.
