Russia Demands Security Guarantees as Part of Any Ukraine Peace Deal
Russian Official Outlines Terms for Ukraine Peace Agreement
According to Главком: In an interview with the Russian newspaper 'Izvestia', Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that any peace agreement with Ukraine must include security guarantees for Russia. Grushko emphasized that while a peaceful settlement should account for Ukraine's security interests, a core component must be the protection of Russia's own security concerns. This demand highlights a fundamental point of contention, as Ukraine and its allies view Russia as the aggressor in the conflict.
Absence of Guarantees for Russia Criticized
Grushko further noted that none of the European Union's leaders have mentioned providing security guarantees for Russia, which he considers a vital aspect for reaching a deal. He asserted that an agreement would be impossible without such assurances. Similar statements have been made by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, indicating a consistent position from Moscow and some of its interlocutors.
“These statements demonstrate that Russia considers the security of its interests critically important for resolving the conflict with Ukraine.” - Alexander Grushko
The inclusion of security guarantees for Russia could become a pivotal factor in any future negotiations, reflecting the profound differences between the positions of Moscow and Kyiv, as well as their international partners. This underscores the complexity of the situation and the need to find a balance between the security of all sides to achieve a stable peace in the region. The war, now in its third year, has created a deep-seated lack of trust that makes such mutual guarantees exceptionally difficult to negotiate.
