DTEK Reports 34 Substations Destroyed by Russia, with $90.6 Billion Needed for Energy Sector Recovery
Energy Facility Attacked in Odesa Region
According to Главком: On February 26, Russian forces targeted a DTEK energy facility in the Odesa region. This attack struck the 34th major substation to be hit since the full-scale invasion began. The assault has resulted in significant damage to over 45% of DTEK's large substations in and around Odesa, highlighting the severe strain on the region's power infrastructure. These attacks are part of a broader Russian campaign to target Ukraine's civilian energy grid.
State of the Power Sector
Since the war started, not a single transmission substation in the Odesa region has survived intact. This creates immense challenges in providing electricity for both residents and industry. The estimated cost to repair and modernize Ukraine's entire energy sector over the next decade has now reached $90.6 billion. This figure is 34% higher than previous damage assessments, underscoring the escalating scale of destruction. The long-term economic impact of this damage will be profound.
Government representative Yuliia Svyrydenko stated that the Russian Federation will continue its strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure even after winter ends.
The systematic attacks on Ukraine's power grid, particularly in regions like Odesa, demonstrate Russia's strategy to destabilize the country by targeting civilian infrastructure. Destroying these substations not only disrupts the immediate power supply but also severely hampers economic recovery, which will require massive investment. Given the ongoing threat of further strikes, it is critical to protect remaining energy assets and develop robust plans for rapid infrastructure restoration.
