Record Expansion in Italy: Ryanair Boosts Flights After Tax Abolition
Ryanair's Expanded Operations in Emilia-Romagna
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Following the elimination of a municipal tax at the airports of Forlì, Parma, and Rimini-effective January 1, 2026-Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced a record-breaking expansion of its flight program to Italy's Emilia-Romagna region for the summer 2026 season.
The airline will operate 83 routes during the new season, enabling it to transport 700,000 passengers-a 50% increase compared to previous years. Among the highlights are the launch of 9 new routes, which are expected to boost the region's tourism infrastructure. As part of this initiative, Ryanair will also preserve over 445 jobs at local airports, a critical factor for Emilia-Romagna's economy.
New Routes and Destinations
Specifically, the carrier plans to operate:
- 63 routes to Bologna, including one new route to Castellón (Spain);
- 3 routes to Forlì, with two new ones to Cagliari (Italy) and London Stansted (UK);
- 5 routes in Parma, featuring three new destinations: Tirana (Albania), Reggio Calabria (Italy), and London Stansted (UK);
- 12 routes in Rimini, including four new destinations to Wrocław (Poland), Manchester (UK), Cologne (Germany), and Catania (Italy).
Emilia-Romagna becomes the fifth Italian region to scrap the passenger tax, joining Abruzzo, Calabria, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Sicily. These changes are expected to enhance the region's tourist appeal and create new travel opportunities.
Ryanair's expansion in Emilia-Romagna reflects a broader trend of intensifying competition among carriers as they seek to attract tourists.
The cancellation of the municipal tax could serve as a model for other Italian regions looking to stimulate visitor numbers and support local economies. Notably, the increase in routes may also positively impact the development of infrastructure and services in the area.
As Ryanair continues to expand its operations in Italy, it’s worth noting the airline's recent announcement of a record winter schedule for Bratislava, which highlights its commitment to enhancing connectivity across Europe. This strategic move not only underscores Ryanair's growing influence in the region but also reflects a competitive landscape among low-cost carriers aiming to attract more travelers.
