Strikes on Military Ships in Kerch

According to ХВИЛЯ: On June 26, drones operated by the SBU's Alpha unit targeted two Russian naval support vessels and air defense systems in temporarily occupied Kerch. The attacks occurred at the Zaliv shipbuilding plant and near the Kerch Strait. These actions are part of a broader Ukrainian campaign to degrade Russian military capabilities in the region.

The assault destroyed two Project 15310 cable-laying ships-the 'Volga' and the 'Vyatka'-as well as the 'Petropavlovsk' cargo-passenger ferry, which was 96% complete. The cable ships were designed to deploy the Garmonia hydroacoustic surveillance system and lay non-contact mines. Additionally, the strikes hit air defense assets, including weapons and radar systems of the S-400 surface-to-air missile complex. The attacks triggered a massive fire on the vessels and wiped out the targeted air defense equipment.

Significance of the Operation

This operation is part of a 40-day pressure campaign against Russia, launched on the orders of President Volodymyr Zelensky. Each of the destroyed cable ships, the 'Volga' and the 'Vyatka,' is valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.

The successful execution of this mission highlights Ukraine's intensified efforts in the armed conflict and its drive to neutralize Russia's military assets in the area. Eliminating strategic targets like cable-laying vessels and air defense systems can significantly hamper the enemy's operational capabilities, especially amid ongoing hostilities. These events also underscore the escalating conflict and the growing role of drone technology in modern combat operations.

These recent strikes in Kerch are part of a larger strategy by Ukraine to target Russian military capabilities across various regions. Similar operations have been reported, including a recent offensive that hit military sites in the Leningrad and Krasnodar regions. Such coordinated attacks reflect the ongoing efforts to diminish Russia's operational effectiveness.
