Russia Losing More Troops Than It Can Recruit for Fifth Straight Month: Ukraine's Top Commander
Russian Army Casualties and the Role of Drones
According to Главком: Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated at the Ukraine-NATO Council meeting in Brussels that for five consecutive months, Russian forces have been suffering greater personnel losses than they are able to replenish through mobilization. According to Syrskyi, this trend is directly linked to the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone units. Since the start of 2026, total Russian military casualties have exceeded 141,500, with over 83,000 of those being irreversible losses.
Syrskyi noted that the Russian army is losing at least 1,000 troops killed or wounded every single day. Ukrainian unmanned systems units are playing a critical role in exhausting Russian forces.
“For the fifth month in a row, thanks to their work alone, Russia is losing more personnel than it can mobilize,” said Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Progress Against Russian Aggression
Ukraine has also significantly ramped up strikes deep behind enemy lines, driven by the rapid deployment of Middle Strike-type drones. Syrskyi reported notable successes in suppressing Russian air defenses at closer ranges, which has enabled more effective targeting of logistics hubs, oil refineries, and defense-industrial facilities inside Russia.
“Today, Ukraine is not only defending itself-we are protecting the future of the entire Euro-Atlantic space,” Syrskyi emphasized.
During the session, Syrskyi briefed allies on the frontline operational situation, Ukraine’s defense needs, and key priorities. He also invited the NATO Military Committee to visit Ukraine for further discussions on deepening cooperation.
This update highlights the growing importance of drone technology in modern warfare and its potential to shift the balance of power on the battlefield. Ukraine’s increasing effectiveness with unmanned systems could prove decisive in countering Russian aggression. Moreover, the invitation extended to NATO’s Military Committee signals Ukraine’s push for stronger defense collaboration with international partners, which may lead to enhanced support from NATO and other allies in the ongoing conflict.
The ongoing effectiveness of Ukrainian drone units not only contributes to higher Russian casualties but also plays a crucial role in the evolving dynamics of the conflict. As reported by Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi, the pressure on Russian air defenses is intensifying amid emerging missile shortages, which further complicates their operational capabilities.
