IPC on the detention of Russian athletes: who will be held accountable
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is responding to the detention of Russian occupiers participating in tournaments under its auspices. Questions arise regarding the IPC as the participation of Russian military personnel in the war against Ukraine is a violation of the law in many countries. How will the IPC act in the event of the detention of Russian soldiers? Will the organization provide them with legal protection? IPC director Craig Spence clarified that the responsibility for athletes lies with the national paralympic committee.
Russian athletes continue to spark controversies, particularly their participation in propaganda events. Speed skater Aleksandra Saitova, recognized by ISU as a neutral athlete, attended Putin's address to the Federal Assembly, provoking outrage. Another athlete, skier Veronika Stepanova, shared a photo of Saitova's participation in a propaganda event. Participation in such events violates the IOC recommendations on neutral athletes, which may have consequences for international competitions.
