Scorching Temperatures Grip Western Europe

In France, authorities have declared the highest red alert level, forcing the closure of over 800 schools and rescheduling classes at 1,800 educational institutions. Warnings have been issued in 49 of the country’s 96 departments, with 40 departments under orange alert. Temperatures in western and central France are expected to exceed 40°C. In the Gironde region, three people aged between 80 and 95 have died, with the extreme heat cited as a contributing factor. More than 35 million people have been urged to exercise extreme caution.
Heatwave Impact Across Europe
Spain has declared its first official heatwave of the season, lasting from Sunday to Wednesday, with forecasts predicting temperatures up to 44°C in some areas. In Madrid, a public screening of the Spanish national football team’s match against Saudi Arabia was canceled due to the extreme conditions. Germany saw temperatures climb above 30°C, leading to the suspension of the Berlin Open tennis tournament final. In Belgium, railway services have been disrupted as a direct result of the hot weather.
The United Kingdom has issued an extreme heat warning for southern England and Wales from Monday through Thursday. Temperatures could reach 38°C, surpassing the current June record of 35.6°C set in 1976. Belgium also recorded temperatures above 30°C on Sunday, which may become the highest ever observed, according to David Dehenauw.
“The extreme heat gripping Western Europe is having serious social and economic consequences,” said David Dehenauw.
In response to the heatwave, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has banned alcohol consumption during the Fête de la Musique festival in 35 regions. Paris authorities have allowed city parks to remain open around the clock. In Ukraine, a 50-year-old man collapsed due to 30°C heat in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district on June 22. According to the Aemet meteorological service, temperatures are expected to start dropping by Thursday, though the heat will remain intense.
The extreme heat sweeping Western Europe is causing significant social and economic disruption, affecting education, public events, and transportation networks. Governments across the region are implementing measures to protect their populations and mitigate the risks posed by these high temperatures.
