U.S. Weighs Lifting Sanctions on Russia for a Ceasefire, but Kyiv Refuses to Give Up Donbas
Talks Between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine Hit a Wall
According to ХВИЛЯ: Washington may propose removing sanctions against Moscow in exchange for a truce, yet Kyiv would receive no security guarantees. Negotiations have stalled over the Donbas region, where Ukraine has flatly rejected any scenario involving territorial concessions. U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner failed to travel to Kyiv, highlighting growing diplomatic friction. This breakdown comes amid broader geopolitical tensions, with the war in Ukraine now entering its third year.
The Donbas Deadlock
Though the formal pause in talks is attributed to the conflict in Iran, the real impasse dates back to February, before Iran's military operation began. All parties-Ukrainian, American, and Russian-had agreed on certain points of a peace plan, but negotiations ultimately collapsed over a single unresolved issue: Donbas. Kyiv has sent an unequivocal message: Donbas will not be handed over to Moscow, Washington, or anyone else.
Russia has escalated its demands, pushing for a so-called demilitarized free economic zone in Donbas, but Ukraine has rejected this proposal outright. Sources indicate that earlier in the talks, there was an attempt to pressure Ukraine into some form of territorial handover, which Kyiv refused. The stance of Ukraine’s government and public remains unwavering-not only as a matter of principle, but because any concession would immediately embolden Russia to make further territorial claims.
The U.S. envoys did not make it to Kyiv because, according to a source, there was little point in visiting if they would only hear the same arguments regarding Donbas. President Trump has failed to secure Ukraine’s agreement to cede land, while Russia, despite efforts to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure, lost that battle.
Now, Washington may attempt to pitch the idea of lifting sanctions in exchange for vague concessions from the Kremlin, such as a ceasefire without security guarantees. The Trump administration is convinced this is merely a matter of a small piece of land, believing Ukraine should give it to Russia to end the war. However, Kyiv reserves the right to refuse any territorial concessions. This ongoing deadlock underscores the critical need for continued international support to ensure Ukraine’s security.
As the U.S. grapples with its diplomatic strategy, the situation in Ukraine remains precarious, especially with Trump shifting his focus to Iran and leaving Ukraine without attention from the White House. This shift could further complicate negotiations, as Kyiv stands firm on its territorial integrity amidst growing regional tensions.
