Washington Cuts Its NATO Force Contribution, Urging Europe to Step Up on Air Power
US Scales Back NATO Force Model Commitment
According to Главком: The United States has formally informed its NATO allies of plans to reduce its contribution to the Alliance's Force Model. This decision aligns with the 2026 US National Defense Strategy and NATO's Defense Planning Concept 3.0. As part of this shift, European allies and Canada are expected to increase their involvement in manned and unmanned aviation, as well as naval vessels.
General Alexus Grynkiewicz, head of US European Command and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, stated that the NATO Force Model had developed an unhealthy reliance on American forces.
“President Trump, Secretary Hegseth, and others have made it crystal clear that this must change-and it will. The potential reality of fighting simultaneous conflicts across multiple theaters demands it,”
he emphasized.
NATO's Next Steps
Meanwhile, NATO headquarters is working to offset the reduction in US capabilities through increased contributions from other member states. General Grynkiewicz also noted that
“two areas where Canada and European allies can ramp up now and in the near term are manned and unmanned aviation, as well as naval vessels.”
A NATO summit is scheduled for July in Ankara, where further steps to implement these changes will likely be discussed. Notably, in April 2026, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 troops from Germany, part of the broader effort to adapt Alliance forces to new strategic realities.
This reduction in the US military contribution to NATO could significantly reshape Europe's security landscape, pushing allies to accelerate their own defense capabilities. The decision also reflects emerging geopolitical challenges facing the Alliance, including threats from Russia and other potential adversaries. The Ankara summit will serve as a critical forum for debating next steps in strengthening collective defense and modernizing NATO's forces for current conditions.
As the US reduces its NATO commitments, the implications for European defense strategies become increasingly critical. This shift not only reflects the need for allied nations to bolster their military capabilities but also aligns with broader trends in US military presence in the region.
