Keir Starmer’s Visit to Kyiv

According to 5 канал: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has traveled to Kyiv for what is expected to be his final official trip as head of government. He stepped down in June after leading the UK for over two years. This visit takes place amid a deepening political crisis at home, with Labour’s approval ratings declining sharply. The party came to power two years ago by winning nearly four times as many parliamentary seats as the Conservatives.

Internal tensions within the Labour Party are running high as Starmer’s personal approval has dropped and the party has started losing ground to the Reform Party in local elections. Andy Burnham, former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is being tipped as Starmer’s likely successor. Burnham won a parliamentary by-election in June and has since announced his candidacy for the party’s leadership primaries. Starmer has pledged to fully support his successor.

Sports Events and Protests in Ukraine

While in Kyiv, Starmer was invited to a football match between Kolos Bureviy and Shakhtar Stalevi. The night he arrived, England’s national team lost a World Cup semifinal match. Despite the loss, Starmer appeared in good spirits at the stadium. Meanwhile, protests erupted across Ukraine on the day of his visit, with Kyiv serving as the epicenter.

I believe Ukraine will win this war. The last six months have been a real turning point. At the start of the conflict, everyone thought Russia would win in a matter of weeks. Now we are in year five. Medium- and long-range missiles are being used by Ukraine with high effectiveness. Economic sanctions have dealt real damage to the Russian economy. Work on the shadow fleet is already done. But another reason I think we sometimes lose sight of this is that one of the consequences of a four-and-a-half-year conflict in Ukraine is that they now have some of the most efficient and effective armed forces in all of Europe. They are strong on technology, have incredible frontline skills, and their capabilities in drone warfare-I remember seeing their early capabilities-are now world-leading.

Starmer’s visit to Kyiv on his final day as prime minister underscores the importance of Western support for Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing war and political challenges in the UK. His remarks on the evolution of Ukraine’s military reflect a shift in how the conflict is perceived, highlighting Ukraine’s growing military strength and its ability to resist aggression. This visit may also serve as a powerful signal to his successor about the need to continue backing Ukraine in its fight for independence.

During his previous visits to Ukraine, Starmer has been recognized for his unwavering support, notably receiving the Order of Freedom. This honor highlights the UK's commitment to Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions.
