Court Sentences Student for Causing Severe Injuries

According to Главком: A student from the Lviv State University of Life Safety has been handed a suspended sentence by the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Lviv for inflicting grievous bodily harm on an employee of a Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center (TCC). The assault occurred on July 12, 2025, inside a military medical commission (MMC) building on Lemkivska Street in Lviv. The court imposed a one-year suspended sentence, along with compensation of 20,000 hryvnias for medical expenses and 120,000 hryvnias for moral damages.

Conflict Background and Consequences

The altercation erupted because the 'Reserve+' system lacked information confirming the student’s legal right to a mobilization deferment. Although the student presented paper documents from his university, these details were not reflected in the 'Reserve+' app. Initially allowed to use his phone to obtain an electronic certificate (Form No. 9), the student then struck a military officer in the eye, causing minor injuries, before repeatedly punching another TCC employee in the face and body.

The victim suffered severe consequences, including multiple comminuted fractures of the facial bones and skull, underwent several surgeries, and experienced deteriorating vision in his right eye. According to the case materials:

“He cannot feel the right side of his face; his nerve twitches and goes numb. As a result of the injury, his vision in his right eye has worsened.”

Notably, two separate criminal investigations have been launched in connection with this incident, following the death of a man at a Kyiv hospital after mobilization procedures. In that case, the victim was hospitalized with broken ribs and chest trauma, but no autopsy was performed. The court’s ruling here underscores the severity of the attack and its lasting impact on the victim’s life.

This case highlights the critical need for the 'Reserve+' system to function properly, as the absence of deferment data fueled aggression and violence. The recurrence of such incidents may reflect broader societal tensions around mobilization and the urgent need to improve support mechanisms for both military personnel and civilians.
