Tehran in Three Days: How "Golden" Interceptors are Losing to Cheap Drones
The British publication The Times, citing Ukrainian officers, reports on the inefficiency of American air defense tactics in the Middle East. US military and allies launch up to eight missiles from the Patriot system or use SM-6 interceptors costing around six million dollars to destroy drones like the «Shahed» valued at 70 thousand dollars. It is noted that there is a disregard for camouflage rules and constant position changes. An example is given of the destruction of a stationary early warning radar station AN/FPS-132 worth over a billion dollars and another air defense radar using three cheap drones.
Conceptual Gap: US Doctrine versus War of Attrition
We observe a conceptual gap between US doctrine and the realities of modern war of attrition. The American air defense system was built to repel attacks from a technologically advanced opponent, where the cost of the interceptor is secondary to the value of the protected object. The collision with the tactics of cheap mass drone use has exposed the financial and logistical vulnerability of this model. Using expensive missiles against budget drones leads to a rapid depletion of arsenals.
Survival Mistake: Immobile Radars and Poor Camouflage
Neglecting the mobility and camouflage of radars indicates the lack of experience of US contingents in conditions of constant enemy reconnaissance. The forces in the Middle East relied on technical superiority, ignoring the basic survival rules for radar stations developed by the Ukrainian army in real combat conditions.
Consequences: Revisiting Tactics and New Air Defense Shortages
The destruction of strategic radars by cheap drones will force the Pentagon to reconsider its air defense tactics and the economy of combat operations. The experience of Ukrainian forces in camouflage and creating mobile fire groups acquires high practical value for Western allies.
However, the urgent replenishment of American losses in radars and interceptor missiles in the Middle East will be carried out at the expense of the same production capacities that supply weapons for the Ukrainian army, which will inevitably intensify the shortage of air defense systems.
