Tokyo Tops the Ranking of the Best Cities for Remote Work in 2025: Study Details
Experts from the International Workplace Group conducted research and identified the best city in the world for online work. That city is Tokyo, as reported by CNBC, writes 'Glavcom'.

The capital of Japan topped the global ranking of the best cities for 'workation' in 2025, surpassing other popular destinations. This ranking evaluates cities based on their suitability for combining remote work with travel and leisure,” the publication writes.
Advantages of Tokyo for Work and Leisure
Tokyo ranked first due to its combination of high technology, reliable and fast networks, an efficient public transport system, and a low crime rate. Additionally, the city offers incredible cultural diversity, numerous historical attractions, entertainment, and notable cuisine. These factors make it an ideal place for those seeking to combine productive work with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture.
During the experiment, researchers analyzed several megacities, including Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Budapest, Seoul, Barcelona, Beijing, Lisbon, Rome, Paris, and Valletta. Scientists compared the megacities based on 12 different criteria: cost of travel, internet speed, access to nature, availability of workspaces, and climate features.
According to IWG, here are the 10 cities with the best job opportunities in 2025:

- Barcelona
- Beijing
- Lisbon
- Rome
- Paris
- Valletta
The results were evaluated on a scoring system. Tokyo scored 91 out of 120 possible points. Experts highly appreciated the new Japanese visa for digital nomads, allowing remote workers to stay in the country for up to a year. Rio de Janeiro and Budapest took second and third places in the ranking.
It should be noted that the analytical platform Numbeo presented an updated list of cities worldwide based on quality of life.
The leading employment provider IWG identified Tokyo as the best city for online work in the world in 2025. The city earned this title due to its high technologies, convenient infrastructure, and cultural richness, making it an ideal place for work and leisure.
