New Toll for Crossing the Strait of Hormuz

According to Главком: U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled the potential introduction of transit fees for the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on the absence of an agreement between Washington and Tehran. These charges would be framed as payment for American services to Middle Eastern nations, described as 'guardian angel services.' Trump also clarified that no fees would be imposed during the initial 60-day ceasefire period.

Once this window closes, the fees will not be collected unless the U.S. decides to implement them unilaterally in the event no formal treaty is signed. The current memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran leaves ambiguous whether control over the strait remains with Iran. The document guarantees free passage for vessels for a two-month period.

Rising Tensions in the Region

Iran's military leadership has announced plans to block the Strait of Hormuz, citing Washington's violations of prior peace agreements-particularly the failure to resolve hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. The naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have issued warnings about dangers to ships approaching the strait.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has distanced himself from the recently signed agreement with the U.S., which he believes grants Tehran extensive economic benefits while postponing nuclear program talks. Khamenei stated he only authorized the deal because Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian assumed full responsibility for it and pledged to protect citizens' rights and the resistance front.

As a result, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, with potential repercussions for international trade and regional security. The proposed transit fee could become an additional flashpoint in U.S.-Iran relations and impact economies reliant on shipping through this strategically vital waterway. Monitoring developments is crucial, as any shifts in the political or military landscape could significantly affect global markets and stability in the region.
