The Christmas and New Year season in Europe is traditionally accompanied by peak load on airports. This time, in addition to the large passenger flow, there are strikes by aviation personnel, which may lead to delays and cancellations of flights in December 2025 and early January 2026. Visit Ukraine reports on this writes.

According to unions and aviation services, protests cover several popular tourist destinations, particularly in Southern and Western Europe.

Flight delays in Europe: where are the risks the highest

  • The most difficult situation is forecasted in Italy. A nationwide strike of ground staff is planned for January 9, along with a separate 24-hour action at Milan-Linate Airport. Additionally, on January 31, there may be disruptions due to a controllers' protest, particularly in Verona. Spontaneous transport strikes without a clear schedule are also expected in December.

  • In the United Kingdom, problems are possible at London airports. In Luton, staff strikes servicing easyJet and DHL flights will last from December 19 to 22 and 26 to 29. At Heathrow, protests from December 22 to 24 and December 26 may affect Scandinavian Airlines flights.

Flight delays in Europe: Spain, Portugal, and France

  • In Spain, regular strikes of ground and baggage services, including Ryanair's partner, will continue until the end of December. The highest risks are at the airports of Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, and the Canary Islands.

  • In Portugal, strikes by airport staff in Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and the islands may intensify on December 31 and January 1 – during the peak travel dates.

  • In France, aviation services warn of potential disruptions due to staff shortages and possible strikes at the airports of Paris, Nice, and Lyon, even without clearly announced dates.

Passengers are advised to arrive at airports early, regularly check flight statuses, and allow extra time for transfers, as strikes may occur in series or on specific days of the week.

It should be noted that border control on trains to Poland is gradually being transitioned to document checks during movement.
