Dnipro Family-Style Home Shut Down Amid Child Torture Allegations Against Caregivers
Dnipro Couple Charged with Child Torture
According to Главком: Prosecutors in Dnipro have formally charged a married couple, who ran a family-style children's home, with torturing minors. The children, aged between three and ten, allegedly endured sustained physical and psychological abuse. The case came to light after the eldest child in their care reported the cruelty upon starting at a new educational institution. The children were reportedly beaten, humiliated, isolated, and forced into hard labor.
Systematic Abuse and Its Consequences
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the caregivers deprived the children of food, forced them to walk on stones until their feet bled, and made them sleep on a wooden bench without bedding. As punishment, children had their heads shaved, were chained up, and were compelled to swear or mimic animal behavior. The children were denied their own names and instead called by offensive and obscene nicknames. Girls were beaten with rose stems, and one girl was struck in the face with a switch for losing a needle.
The children have now been moved to a safe location, and the family-style home has been dissolved. A court has imposed pre-trial restrictions on the two foster parents. Officials from child services will also face separate legal scrutiny for their actions. This case has provoked public outrage in Ukraine and raised serious questions about oversight in such care institutions. Family-style homes are intended to provide a more intimate, family-like environment for orphaned or vulnerable children, making these allegations particularly shocking.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter monitoring of institutions responsible for child welfare, especially family-style homes.
Such brutal treatment not only endangers the physical and psychological health of the children but also exposes systemic failures within the child protection framework. The public and law enforcement response to these incidents could serve as a catalyst for reforming approaches to childcare and protection in Ukraine.
