A fraudster disguised as a charity sentenced to 11 years in prison
According to Прокуратура Київ: In Kyiv, a man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for posing as a philanthropist and stealing money from Ukrainians' cards by posting phishing links on social media. The 31-year-old resident of Kyiv already had a criminal record for property crimes.
In 2023, fraudsters on Instagram spread information about providing financial assistance to citizens. Victims entered their card details via a link in the post, and then the criminals withdrew money through online banking. One woman lost 60,000 hryvnias because of this.
The court also issued a sentence to the accomplice of the main criminal, who assisted in committing the thefts.
Investigators from the Dnipro District Police Department of the National Police in Kyiv were responsible for investigating the crime.
Such fraudsters tried to profit from the noble guise of charity, but they failed to avoid responsibility before the law.
