Harvest Disrupted by Fuel Shortage in Southern Russia

According to ХВИЛЯ: Robert Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, has reported a fuel crisis unfolding in southern Russia amid the ongoing harvest. The high cost of diesel, logistical bottlenecks, and overloaded grain elevators have made crop collection unprofitable. The situation is worsened by the fact that the nearest transshipment port is over 200 kilometers away, rendering transportation economically unviable.

In June 2022, Russian forces deliberately set fire to grain fields in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, further complicating the agricultural outlook. This season, barley yields have reached 55 centners per hectare, and wheat harvesting is expected to begin soon, adding more pressure. The strain on grain elevators is a growing concern, as the large volumes of crops demand substantial storage and transport capacity.

Robert Brovdi: 'So, what do you refuel-a tank or a combine harvester?'

He also warned that 'otherwise, Moscow will collapse before the next harvest,' signaling dire consequences for the country's agricultural sector. The railway system is monopolized by the state-owned Russian Railways (RZD), while maritime freight costs have doubled, further squeezing farmers and agribusinesses.

The fuel crisis in southern Russia during the harvest season highlights how both external and internal factors can destabilize agriculture. Soaring fuel prices and logistical challenges threaten not only the current crop but also the region's economic stability. Given the current circumstances, farmers may face severe difficulties in harvesting and moving their grain, potentially reducing profitability and raising concerns about food security. Amid ongoing war and international sanctions, such crises could have even more profound long-term effects on Russia's economy.

The ongoing challenges faced by farmers in southern Russia are not isolated incidents. A recent report highlights the critical fuel shortages that could further jeopardize agricultural productivity as the harvest season approaches. Understanding the broader implications of this fuel crisis is essential for grasping the full impact on the region's economy and food security.
