Drone Strike Hits Russian Aviation Systems Manufacturer 'Progress' in Michurinsk
Attack on the Progress Plant
According to Главком: Unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Progress plant in Michurinsk, located in Russia's Tambov region, a facility specializing in equipment for aviation and missile control systems. This marks at least the third assault on the enterprise since the start of the full-scale invasion. The extent of damage and any casualties are still being assessed.
Production and Strategic Importance
The Progress plant ranks among the five largest industrial enterprises in the Tambov region. It manufactures advanced technology components, including:
- gyroscopic instruments for flight stabilization and control;
- heading indicators and autopilots for navigation and automated guidance;
- angular velocity sensors and other elements of flight and navigation systems.
These products are used in Russian combat aircraft, helicopters, and missile systems. In addition to military output, the plant also produces electrical equipment for civilian use and components for gas and oil pipelines.
Media outlets, including Glavcom citing OSINT sources Supernova+ and Exilenova+, reported the attack on the Progress facility. Local residents in Michurinsk recorded explosions shortly after midnight. This strike follows a previous drone attack on the Tambov region in April, when locals reported blasts and fires on the city outskirts. Earlier, in June, the plant suffered its first attack, damaging one of its main production buildings. A subsequent strike occurred on the night of February 12, during which residents noted at least 12 explosions.
The Progress plant lies roughly 350 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and Ukraine imposed sanctions on the enterprise in November. Finished products are shipped to Moscow and Tatarstan. Due to Russian air defense activity during the latest attack, a supermarket located about 100 meters from the plant and a local industrial-technological college also sustained damage.
This strike on the Progress plant underscores the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with a focus on strategically vital facilities that support the military-industrial complex.
In wartime, such attacks disrupt the supply and production of military equipment, potentially influencing battlefield dynamics. Targeting these types of enterprises could shift the regional balance of power, complicating operations for Russian forces that depend on technology from factories like Progress.
The recent drone strike on the Progress plant highlights the ongoing vulnerability of key military production facilities in Russia. Similarly, another facility in Chuvashia, a critical supplier of military components, was also targeted in a separate attack.
