UEFA Rejects Appeal from Berdyev’s Club and Bans It from European Competition
UEFA’s Ruling on FC Turan
According to Главком: European football’s governing body, UEFA, has dismissed an appeal lodged by the Azerbaijani club FC Turan, managed by Russian coach Kurban Berdyev, and imposed a ban preventing the team from participating in the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League. The club has been deemed ineligible for the tournament due to its failure to meet admission criteria. The decision is primarily based on events from 2019, when the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan issued a lifetime suspension to seven Turan players in connection with a match-fixing case.
FC Turan Tovuz is barred from the 2026/2027 UEFA Conference League because of its involvement in activities aimed at manipulating or influencing the outcome of matches at the national or international level. The club has announced its intention to challenge UEFA’s decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Impact on the Team and World Cup Updates
Last season, Turan finished third in the Azerbaijani top-flight league, which had earned them a spot in the Conference League qualifiers. However, that qualification right has now been revoked following UEFA’s ruling.
In other sports news, a World Cup playoff match saw Ukraine’s national team lose 1–3 to Sweden in the semifinal of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Goals in the match were scored by:
- Ponomarenko (90+1) for Ukraine
- Gyökeres (6, 51, 72) for Sweden
Finally, the group stage composition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been announced. Teams finishing in the top two positions of each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.
The rejection of FC Turan’s appeal underscores UEFA’s firm stance against match-fixing and the strict enforcement of club eligibility standards. This decision could tarnish the reputation of Azerbaijani football and encourage other clubs to uphold ethical guidelines. The club’s planned appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) may mark a pivotal moment in the case, though the outcome remains uncertain.
The recent developments in European football have significant implications for teams seeking to secure their place in the upcoming tournaments. While FC Turan faces challenges due to UEFA's ruling, other nations are solidifying their positions for the 2026 World Cup. Notably, Iran has officially confirmed its participation in the prestigious event, highlighting the competitive landscape of international football as teams prepare for the global stage.
