Hungary Denies Ukrainian Consuls Access to Hostages from Oschadbank Incident
Ukraine's Diplomatic Appeal to Hungary
According to Главком: Ukraine has formally requested Hungary's immediate release of seven of its citizens, who were taken hostage in Budapest on March 5. Hungarian authorities have refused to grant Ukrainian consular officials access to the detained individuals and have provided no explanation for the circumstances of their seizure.
Details of the Hostage Situation
The incident occurred during a transfer of currency and bank metals between an Austrian financial institution and Ukraine. The National Bank of Ukraine has confirmed the seizure of Oschadbank's cash-in-transit vehicles and the unlawful detention of its security team personnel on Hungarian soil.
"Ukrainian consuls have still not been granted access to the seven Ukrainian citizens taken hostage in Budapest. The Hungarian side has provided no explanations," stated Andrii Sybiha.
He further emphasized:
"We demand their immediate release and are preparing further actions, including at the EU level."
This situation has caused significant concern in Ukraine regarding the safety of its citizens held captive in another country. The incident highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions between Kyiv and Budapest, which have complicated EU consensus on support for Ukraine.
The hostage-taking underscores the critical importance of consular support and international cooperation on security matters. Ukraine's demands for the hostages' immediate release reflect the gravity of the situation and its potential impact on bilateral relations. Hungary's refusal to grant consular access could escalate diplomatic tensions and may lead to the involvement of international bodies to resolve the crisis. Consequently, the situation requires close monitoring and a decisive response from Ukrainian authorities.
